1111 Standing out swept channel screening sortie of convoy UGS 90, New York section.
 
1524 Set course 192'T, speed 9 knots, proceeding to RV with UGS90, Norfolk section,CCD 45 in this vessel, other escort USS QUICK (DD490)

1530 Joined UGS 90, Norfolk section and TG 60.3, (USS EARLE DD635)(F), (USS LANSING DE388), (USS DURANT DE389), which includes this vessel and USS QUICK (DD490). Convoy course 096'T, convoy speed 9.5 knots.
 
1604 Alongside USS EARLE (DD635) passing guard mail.
 
1629 Assumed assigned station.

1058 Rejoining convoy.
 
1636 Radar contact proved to be ship #13, SS TREVAYLOR, straggling. Directed her to steer 114'T at best speed to rejoin convoy 15 miles distant, screening ahead.
 
1828 Departed ship #13 to rejoin convoy.
 
2015 Assumed assigned station.

1555 Tactical command transferred to CCD 45 in this vessel during absence of CTG 60.3 in EARLE.
 
1618 Convoy course changed to 135 degrees True.
 
1800 Convoy course changed to 085 degrees True. USS EARLE returned to screen, tactical command resumed by CTG 60.3.
 
1835 Departed station, making wide sweep astern of convoy.
 
2030 Convoy commenced changing course to 170 degrees True in wheels of 20 degrees.
 
2112 Resumed assigned station.

0230 Departed station standing toward column 9 to investigate light at 15 knots (265 RPM).
 
0240 increased to full speed, standing toward unidentified target near ship #91.
 
0247 Target illuminated by USS DURANT (DE-389), proved to be surfaced submarine. All hands to battle stations.
 
0258 Illuminated submarine by searchlight, majority of crew on deck and conning tower.
 
0300 On various courses and speeds, maneuvering toward submarine, DURANT screening operation.
 
0305 Alongside submarine, commenced giving instructions to submarine over public address system. Established identity of submarine to be German.
 
0339 Lowered ship's motor whaleboat. Lt. Carlton J. Schmidt, USCGR, executive officer, and Ensign Vance K. Randle, USCG, departed with prize crew of 19 men as follows:

0637 Instructed submarine under command of Lt. C. J. Schmidt, USCGR, to get underway on course of 259 degrees True, speed 10 knots.
 
0705 USS DURANT (DE-389) departed to rejoin convoy UGS 90. Took station 600 yards on port quarter of submarine with forward guns trained on her.
 
1336 Changed course to 270 degrees True.
 
1533 Alongside submarine passing personal gear to prize crew.
 
1556 Resumed station.
 
1814 Course changed to 276 degrees True.

1447 Tug Yaquima alongside transferring prize crew aboard.

1452 Standing out Portsmouth swept channel.

1520 Set course 165 degrees True, speed 18.2 knots.

1749 Entered Boston swept channel.
