Picture 51 Provided by James R. Kelly Capt. USCG ret.,Starboard quarter view of the USCGC VANCE (W-487) entering San Diego harbor, November 1952. VANCE underwent a 2-week shakedown / refresher training period with the Navy Fleet Training Group. At the end of this period of mid/late November VANCE departed San Diego enroute to her homeport, Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii. The skeleton structure on the fantail was used as a framework on which we rigged our awning (to keep the ship cool) when in port -- there was, of course, in those days no air conditioning anywhere in the ship. Note the quad 40mm gun mount on the 0-1 level aft and the two depth charge tracks extending beyond the transom. Also note the K-guns on the main deck level aft. Bridge top
![]() Picture 52 Provided by James R. Kelly Capt. USCG ret.,VANCEs re-commissioning ceremony as a Coast Guard Cutter in the Philadelphia Navy Yard [It was at Green Springs Cove, FL] spring/early summer 1952. Note that VANCE is still sporting a "battle ship gray" hull but is showing her new Coast Guard hull number -- (W-487). In the background the stack and bridge of another W is visible -- I believe it's the Coast Guard Cutter DURANT (W-489) which was also in the Philadelphia Navy Yard [It was at Green Springs Cove, FL] for overhaul and recommissioning as a Coast Guard Cutter.![]() Bridge top

I believe the aircraft in the photo is a Coast Guard P5M sea plane from Coast Guard Air Station San Diego that flew out to greet VANCE as she entered San Diego. ![]() Bridge top
