What it looks like and felt like to you Joe wasn't a bad guess at all.
The 'object' is in fact a Patended "Crown" brand Bottle Opener - commonly known in the New Zealand Armed Forces as a "Church Key".
They were very popular tools right up until the advent of screw top beer bottles and then of course they became redundant.
The Crown Bottle Opener is a Kiwi invention!!!
So now you know.
