Comments= My father, SoM3 Aaron Sklar, served aboard Vance from 1943 to 1945. I occasionally visit this site to look for information and review history related to dates in his service record.

Dad passed away in Oct 1981 and we never really had discussed his service. Anyone who might have known him...please contact me at email listing in this posting.

I have some photos of Aaron and shipmates, as well as a few from the surrender of U873, and periodically share them and some Vance history with a local high school NJROTC where I volunteer.

Comments= I left Travis AFB and flew to Clark AFB sailing up from Subic Bay on the USS Mars then waited on the USS Savage till the Vance returned from patrol in the Straits. I came on board in Koahisung Taiwan in July 1967. I had been stationed at Great Lakes from February 1966. I was a deck ape at first and I believe the BM3 last name was Stewart?

I remember after we left Taiwan we went up to Yokosuka Japan and docked across from the USS Kitty Hawk. We apes scrapped the side of the ship and I got my first or second "welcome aboard" going over the side into the water. My signalman bosses while aboard was a guy named Billy Joe Huxford SM1 and Rex Albertson SM3.

I remained on board through it's decommision at Vallejo CA in 1969. We stayed on a floating bunk house for a while. Then I went back to Pearl to board the ocean fleet tug USS Tekelma TF113.

Comments= As a LTJG, I served as Officer-in Charge, PCF 37, Coastal Division 13, out of Cat Lo, RVN. Rode the Vance and Koiner in 1966/1967

We used Vance and Koiner as motherships to extend our time at sea. I'd be glad to hear from anyone who might remember those days or have photos of the boats along side. Also, a group of us have been building a monument dedicated to those USN/USCG troops that paid the ultimate price. Anyone interested in the monument, please go to www.vummf.org.

I shared duties on PCF 37 with LTJG Tom McBride and we were out of CosDiv 13, Cat Lo . We rode the Vance after the departure of Captain Arnheiter, but knew many of the cast of characters dipicted in Neil Sheehans book "The Arnheiter Affair". Chaplain Dando rode on several patrols with me. After he returned to Pearl in August '67, he met my wife at Honolulu airport during my R&R. I arrived later at Hickam where he and my wife met me. That was a very relieved wardroom after Arnheiter's departure

Comments= I am happy to see that a lot of my old shipmates are in contact with one another. I look forward to communicating with old friends.

Yep, I am scratching my head and trying to remember people and events on the Vance also. When I came on board, it was a few months after captain Arnheiter left. When I reported for duty, I remember people telling me about that captain and I remember people telling me that I was lucky not to have been on board when Arnheiter was around.

Somewhere entangled in the cobwebs in my brain, the name Sweeney, Ford, and Spooner are familiar. Roach I remember and Johnson I remembered him but not his name until you mentioned it. I do remember Chiefs Wakefield and Blake. Both were really cool people.

Let me add a tidbit of information that might spark a little recall at least with George. When I came aboard, there was a short timer first class EN running "A" Gang that was being discharged. I relieved him. The plan that was in effect before I arrived, was that I would go to the engine room and take the place of another EN2 that was running the "hole." He was very anxious to get away from those eardrum busting, head splitting opposed piston engines.

Comments=My dad was on the Vance in the beginning of the Vietnam war but after the Arnheiter Affair... I am having trouble finding any mention of him. I wonder if he was put on a smaller ship, like a patrol ship, after getting to Vietnam.
If you have any good web addresses to recommend, where I could find information on enlisted men- maybe just rosters, I would appreciate it.
Thanks for taking care of the log. It's wonderful to see you all still so close. Kathryn
