Comments= I served on the USS Vance 1958-59 as a Seaman. I transferred over from the USS Walton DE-361 (57-8). I also served on the USS Foss DE-59 (56-7). All in Pearl Harbor). After I got out of the Navy (1959) I worked at odd jobs for about five years then went to college (SBVC) in San Bernardino, California, then to UCLA, and graduate school at Johns Hopkins University). I was a late bloomer.

After college, I worked in Singapore for an American company for three years. I joined the US State Department after returning to the US. As a diplomat, I served in in the US Embassies in Brussels, Belgium, Kinshasa, Zaire (Congo), and Paris, France (twice). I retired from the USG in 1996. I worked as a government contractor for a couple of years then did a couple of years with the Department of Justice National Drug Intelligence Center. I am currently living in Brussels, Belgium with my wife who works for the US State Department. We have a son 25 years old just finishing his Masters at UCLA in computer animation.

I am here as a "dependent spouse" so I am now free to write my autobiography. We are on a three year assignment here and have two years to go. We make our home in Oakton, VA just outside Washington, DC.

I would appreciate hearing from you and others who served on the USS Vance. It might help jog my memory and help me give a little more character to what life was like on the ship.
