Lieutenant Commander Melvin E. Seiler, USN
LCDR Melvin E. Seiler enlisted in the U.S.Navy in December 1945 and in March 1952 was advanced to Chief Quartermaster. he was ordered to the Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island and was commissioned through the Officer Integration Program in August 1956, As an Ensign he was assigned to duty aboard the USS HANCOCK (CVA-19) followed by a tour aboard the USS MIDWAY (CVA-41) serving in both the Operations and Weapons Departments. In 1958 he was transferred to the USS JOHN W. THOMASON (DD-76) and served as Weapons Officer and later as Operation Officer. He was ordered to duty as Officer-in-Charge, USS WISEMAN (DE-667) in 1960. He took Command of the USS WHIPPOORWILL (MSC-207) in May 1962 and in January 1963 assumed the additional duty of Commander, Mine Division THIRTY-TWO. In September 1964 he was ordered to Instructor Duty at the Fleet Anti-Air Warfare Training Center, San Diego, California where he remained until June 1968 when he was ordered to the USS JENKINS (DD-447) as Executive Officer, the position he held until reporting to the USS VANCE (DER-387). LCDR Seiler is married and has two children. He and his wife Patty reside in the Pearl Harbor area.
