Shown here in a special hammock built to comfort him. In a violent storm during the first picket, Tom slipped on the wet deck and broke his back.
Upon arrival in Dunedin, Tom was flown to Operation Deepfreeze headquarters in Christchurch and then on to Trippler Army Hospital, where he was treated.
